a heart
created
from the broken
pieces that
come with life

this heart (above)
designed and
placed together
at the hands of
a young child
with cancer

she discovered
at an early age
how life
can be
fragile
tentative
and
even still
she revealed the contents of her heart

what are
the parts of
your heart?

we don't readily
talk candidly
about
the many heart
pieces
pulsing within us

the pieces
torn by
the unexpected in life

the pieces
surprised by the
unconditional

the pieces
ripped
in two
because
anxiety sometimes
gets the best of us...

sometimes
our own
other times
from others

but simple things
like listening
re-considering
forgiving
being
forgiven
hold
hearts together

i talked about these things
with children
recently
then again with
a friend whose
heart has been
newly torn
into pieces

i saw the artwork above
and was reminded
not
of the broken pieces
but of the
whole

the
heart

the life
that
keeps on
even when we
cannot sense
the next pulse
