On behalf of the group
she asked
what I've
learned after
21 years of ministry.
A partial list of lessons learned:
Sometimes the brokenness in
others moves people to deal
with brokenness within themselves.
(It's happened to me.)
Most of the time people don't
want to do things differently
even when they say they
want too.
We call "change" by
different names...
renewal,
redevelopment,
revitalization...
hoping all the while
the reality of change
won't sting so badly.
Most children make no more
noise in the sanctuary
than many adults.
New members,
prospective members,
visitors, and others
want the same experience,
the same opportunities
many long time members
enjoy.
Dynamic preaching
is very much related to
dynamic worship.
Dynamic worship depends
on people who desire to
more fully participate.
Young people aren't
seeking glitzy programs
as much as they are
desiring genuine
relationships and
space to share their
talents and gifts.
We love Jesus.
We say it.
We sing it.
Yet, we have a really
difficult time loving
the way Jesus loved.
Most want Easter
but don't want to
spend much time
at the cross.
Moving to a different
pew in the sanctuary
can make
a difference in the life
of a church.
