The theme of the Scripture lesson today was: the Sovereignty of God. How do you introduce such a B I G word and such a B I G concept to children? I did so by bringing the children up on the chancel which is a big wood floor where the choir and the pastors gather. Underneath our chancel are the bass speakers for the pipe organ. When the B I G bass notes are played the entire chancel trembles.
I taught the children how to say Sovereignty. They repeated the B I G word one at a time in the hand held microphone. Then I said the word Sovereignty means that God is B I G....B I G G E R than our questions, bigger than our answers, bigger than our thinking, bigger than anything we can do. Then I asked the organist to play the bass notes. Oh my! The children responded with expressions and squeals and laughter. Their reaction created the entire congregation to react.
That's something in a Presbyterian church!
After the children's sermon I sat with Cyndie. She is a young daughter of a family the church has been helping. My wife begin to preach talking about the sovereignty of God. During the sermon Cyndie drew a picture of God. She asked me,
"Does God have bangs?"
I answered, "Why not!"
Then she asked me, "What color is God?"
I answered, "Every color."
Cyndie colored God's face with blue and green and red and black and pink! She colored the Sovereignty of God. She got it like no one else in the congregation got it! I couldn't help myself. I brought Cyndie up to the chancel at the end of worship and her picture of God and shared her story with the whole congregation.
Does God have bangs? Why not?
What color is God? Every color!

You need to track down the story - "Does God Have a Big Toe?" ... read it to the kids ... they (and the adults) will love it ...
It's a modern midrash retelling of the Babel story and how it "really" happened ... and it all started because one little girl asked - "Mummy, I have a big toe, and you have a big toe, and daddy has a big toe ... DOES GOD HAVE A BIG TOE???"
and the rest is "HISTORY" !!!
The innocence and honesty of children always makes me smile.
