another cross roads...

Today my son turns 17. Seventeen years ago right about this time we got to go see him for the first time. He was born while we were visiting a neighbor for dinner. We told our friends we would have to leave early. When we got the call we rushed down to the hospital to see our son.

He had no name on his crib and he was in a room of his own behind the glass. We could could make out his little face....we could see his feet best of all. My wife loves his feet, always has. The next day we signed adoption papers and the next day we brought him home. The very first Sunday of his life he came to church. My parents held him. We didn't have much time to spread the news. Some people came up to my parents and asked whose baby. My parents responded, "Well it seems your pastor had a baby this weekend!"

Seventeen years ago my son came into our lives. He's one of the best, the very best things that has ever happened. No, he's not perfect.....but the kid has character, strength, compassion, and I love him.

Wow. This is very powerful. I've been lurking for a couple weeks now - but I had to come out of lurkdom for this one. My husband is adopted, and I love listening to his mother tell the story of when she got the call that there was a baby boy available for them. She has always celebrated both his birthday, and adoption day (he was about 3 months old when adopted).

Thank you for sharing this.
