I been doing a lot of listening and reading. Some of the words I've heard and read are worth sharing.
A preacher in Fort Worth (Karl Travis) quoted questions coming from Ancient Greece. He suggests as we speak to and about others and listen to others speak we might continually ask ourselves these three simple questions.
1. Is it true?
2. Is it good?
3. Is it useful?
(I'll resist my temptation to point out particular people in my past who need to spend a lot of time asking these questions. Instead, I"ll spend time asking myself these questions.)
Next, a theologian.
Craig Dykstra.
He writes: "Is the church a tomb or a path? If the church is a grave to which a greiving people come to pay homage to a dead Christ, then God will burst its bounds and leave it EMPTY!"
I don't think any of us in the church can avoid this question. I for one feel as if I've been serving and leading Gods' people buried in the recesses of a tomb. I can't live in tomb like ministry anymore. I intend to do something about that!
Lastly, a singer.
KD Lang.
The words I can share....the haunting tune I can't....together (words and tune) have been a source of healing in my life lately.
i've spent a lifetime carving out my fate
things i like, things i hate
my very nature is to criticize
and cut myself down to size
on the cusp of compromise
to living hell
i slipped and fell
i'm in the corner licking off my wounds
loves come and gone all too soon
looking back upon my life as such
and the remedies, they cost too much
such a frail and fragile place
this egg and shell
upon my face
fueled by desire
wind as to fire
flame of the uninspired
