The Layman
a publication of the
Presbyterian Lay Committee
gave me a belly laugh today.
Finally their publication
was fair!
The picture above is an example of
a person who the Lay Committee
finds wholesome, faithful,
acceptable,
white and delightsome.
When a person is pictured
in the pages
of their publication
smiling,
with hair intact and
good lighting...the
accompanying news
is typically favorable.
However,
when someone
the Lay Committee finds
unacceptable....
someone they find
inappropriate...
the picture is typically
blurred with bad lighting...
and we can be assured of
double chins and bad hair.
That is why I was so surprised
to find the photo below
of a long time proponent
of the Lay Committee
who died this past Oct. 14.
In no way do I find Mr. Jenkins
life or death laughable.
Though I most likely
would not have agreed
with his critique of the
church when he was alive,
I would never disrespect
him here or anywhere else.
My laughter is at the
Lay Committee in their
inability to take the time
to find an appropriate
photo of Mr. Jenkins....
In an article written to
remember and honor
George P. Jenkins
in the Feb. 2010 addition
the only picture the
Lay Committee could
find to print was this:
Really? This is the best
you could do?
Is this
the face of a
Presbyterian excited,
committed, energized
to renew the church?
If this is an example
of "raising the standard"
or
Lay Committee President
Carmen Fowler's
idea of "engaging the challenges
of our time with all the
resources God has placed within
our reach".
Then job
well done.
Fair
and
balanced at last.
